Jamaica, W.I. (November 20, 2006) – Chukka Caribbean Adventures has announced a December 15, 2006 launch date for the much anticipated Jamaica Dogsled Tour a fun, hands-on experience for dog lovers. This exclusive tour will be offered twice a day, a maximum of two people per tour, priced at $100.00 per person with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to the Jamaican Society for Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (JSPCA).

The Jamaica Dogsled Tour sprang from the creation of the Jamaica Doglsed Team, the brainchild of Danny Melville founder and chairman of Chukka Caribbean Adventures. In 2005 he hatched the idea of a Jamaica Doglsed Team, hoping to tap into some of the whimsy of the Bobsled Team. With sponsorship from Jimmy Buffett and Margaritaville, six dogs rescued from the JSPCA, and an animal loving Jamaican named Devon Anderson willing to be Jamaica’s first musher the team was born.

“A common reaction to the idea of a dogsled team and tour in Jamaica is ‘you can’t do that, there’s no snow’ but with the absence of reliable snowfall in North American sled dog racing meccas, mushers have turned to new styles and dryland racing is on the rise,” says Melville.  “The Chukka Caribbean Adventures’ Jamaica Dogsled Tour will be a one of a kind experience in the Caribbean and not easily duplicated for people who love dogs, not an extreme adventure, these dogs are street mutts that have been given a chance to live and be loved.”

This interactive tour will begin with an orientation: a brief history of sleddog racing; the story of how the team was formed and exploits like Anderson’s experiences racing in Scotland and Minnessota; the story of the JSPCA and the great work they do saving street dogs; a bit about the team’s sponsor Jimmy Buffett and Margaritaville; and the upcoming documentary feature film “Sun Dogs” to be released by Chris Blackwell’s Palm Pictures.

Participants will then meet and greet these terrific dogs, assist with watering, learn about their places on the team and their individual stories and the commands to verbally mush the team. After helping to harness the team, guests will mush the dogs as they pull a specially designed and themed two-seater cart (built by Badland Buggy in Edmonton, Alberta) around a two-mile long trail on the beautiful Chukka Cove Farm in Ocho Rios. There will be a rest stop for both the dogs and mushers and after a grandstanding run guest mushers will assist with the un-hitching, rewarding the dogs with a treats and watering and of course photo ops – especially with lead dog Jimmy, named after sponsor Jimmy Buffett.
