DOGSLEDDING FROM JAMAICA TO THE YUKON!
- JAMAICAN MUSHER TO VISIT 2007 YUKON QUEST -
OCHO RIOS, Jamaica
January 30, 2007
----------------------------------------------
Whitehorse, Yukon & Ocho Rios, Jamaica - Jamaican musher Devon Anderson, from the Chukka Caribbean Adventures Jamaica Dogsled Team, will travel north of the 60th parallel for the first time in his life to be part of the epic 24th running of the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race activities.
In a sport that celebrates partnerships – of people, dogs and communities – the new cry of “mush mon” proves the universal appeal of sled dog sports around the world. This year’s Yukon Quest boasts an impressive diversity including reigning Champion Lance Mackey and past champions Hans Gatt, John Schandelmeier and Frank Turner. Seasoned veterans William Kleedehn and David Dalton as well as Kelley Griffin, Japanese rookie Yuka Honda and five other women entrants show the variety of mushers in the 2007 race.
“The Yukon Quest honours the tradition of travel by dog team in the North,” said Yukon Quest (Canada) Executive Director Stephen Reynolds. “Devon and the Jamaica Dogsled Team want to become champions and also want to learn as much as they can about sled dogs. We feel his experience as part of the Yukon Quest will give Devon a deeper understanding of the roots of dogsledding, and we are honoured to be able to share a northern perspective of our mutually loved sport with him. I know Devon will see his tropical dogs with different eyes after his first visit to the Yukon Quest!”
The 1,000-mile Yukon Quest is sometimes referred to as the 'toughest sled dog race in the world'. The 2007 race starts in Whitehorse, Yukon on February 10th regardless of weather conditions and will finish in Fairbanks, Alaska about two weeks later. The race commemorates the historic Arctic Trail and the men, women and sled dogs who challenge the frozen rivers, four mountain ranges, remote isolation and extremes of nature that can see temperatures drop to 40 below zero and bring 100 mile-an-hour storms. The terrain and climate belong to a very different world than the hot sun and sandy beaches of Jamaica. Anderson will visit several kennels and drive a dog team into the northern wilderness as part of the specialized training planned for his trip.
Tourism Yukon and the Yukon Quest partnered to bring Anderson and Melville to the Yukon. “We are excited with the opportunity to host the Jamaican Dogsled Team in partnership with the Yukon Quest,” says Tourism Yukon’s Manager of Marketing Operations, Denny Kobayashi. “The world-wide attention generated by the Jamaican Bobsled Team during the 1988 Winter Olympics provided a great prelude and we feel the Jamaican Dogsled Team creates another opportunity for a universal audience to celebrate how determination and passion can drive ordinary people to achieve extraordinary results even when facing improbable odds. And of course, the Yukon's ‘Larger than Life’ landscape and environment is a perfect setting to experience world-class dogsledding adventures."
Anderson will be accompanied by fellow Jamaican Danny Melville, founder and CEO of Chukka Caribbean Adventures and the creator of the Jamaica Dogsled Team. Their adventure will follow the Yukon Quest to Dawson City, half-way along the race trail and home of the world-famous Klondike Gold Rush.
Their quest to create the Jamaica Dogsled Team has been documented in the soon-to-be released Palm Pictures film “Sun Dogs”. With support from recording star, sponsor, and dog team godfather, Jimmy Buffett and Margaritaville, Anderson may some day yell, “Mush Mon!” to the crowd as he starts this amazing race.
