Newton Marshall Arrives at Rohn Checkpoint in 2010 Iditarod
March 9, 2010 (Alaska) – After two days of competition, Newton Marshall has reached the Rohn checkpoint in the 2010 Iditarod. Rohn is located along the Alaskan mountain range at the confluence between the South Fork and Kuskokwim Rivers.
Softer trail conditions, strong winds and significant snowfall slowed down Marshall and his team as they moved toward the Finger Lake checkpoint and en route to Rainy Pass and Rohn. With a full team of 16 dogs, Marshall departed from Finger Lake at 15:00 PM AKST yesterday.
After three hours and 55 minutes of travel time, the team arrived at the Rainy Pass checkpoint at 18:55 PM last night. Marshall rested there for six hours and 50 minutes and then departed early this morning at 1:45 AM.
Marshall just completed his longest trek of the race so far, clocking almost 13 hours on the trail en route to Rohn. He arrived at the checkpoint at 14:33 PM this afternoon, rested with his 16 dog team and departed. At the time of this release no official departure time has been posted. He is currently in 61st position in the standings.
